Is Having A Generator Smart?

Some people wonder if having a generator is a smart thing. I know my family had a generator when we were growing up and I personally think it is a smart idea for anyone to have. I believe this is especially true if you live in an area where your home could experience floods, hurricanes, tornados, droughts and wildfires that can affect your electricity for short or even long periods of time. I remember when I was little where we lived experienced a terrible storm and the power was out for about a week if I remember correctly. It was so nice to have that generator to help us utilize some items in our home. More recently, just about two weekends ago my family lost power for two days and were very glad they had a generator to help them keep warm. Keep in mind however that purchasing a generator isn’t cheap. It will cost you anywhere from a few hundred, to thousands of dollars depending on the brand, and wattage size you want! So you need to make sure you can afford it, but it my mind it is a worthy investment. That being said, there are some benefits to having a generator.

First of all, the appliances that are hooked up will continue to work normally. So determine which of your appliances are most important to you to keep having while the power is out. I’d recommend having your fridge, furnace, computer, and garage door opener hooked up to the generator as a few basics. Having your fridge hooked up to the generator is nice so that all the food in your fridge and freezer don’t perish during the time the power is out. Chances are you have a full fridge/freezer and you’d lose a lot of money if it all wasted away. Another benefit is that you will be amazed at how quickly the generator can turn on and start working. This will be based on how many appliances you have hooked up to it though. So you might only want to start with the basic essentials and add on from there. Once again, based on the appliances you have hooked up to the generator you could continue to work while other people are stuck without continuing their income stream. This can be done using your computer. Along the same lines, if you decide to plug in your computer or television you can have entertainment during this time to help the time pass more quickly. I’m sure my parent’s appreciated this when we were younger so that we were entertained and not jumping off the walls. Believe it or not, sometimes you can get a discount on your homeowners insurance when you have a generator. That’s pretty cool if you ask me. I am all about saving money on insurance costs. Another great benefit of having a generator is that it can increase the value of your home when you are ready to sell. If you ever find yourself needing assistance with your generator a good source if you live in Houston is Brothers Lighting. They can help you with installation or repair and offer great service at a reasonable price!
